SLE area of expertise:  Special Educational Needs

Current responsibilities:  

  • Responsible for the 33 students with Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs) in the school.
  • Responsible for managing and updating the SEN support list
  • Ensure information is regularly updated and disseminated to staff
  • Line manage a team of 12 Learning Support Assistants, Speech and Language Therapist and Specialist SEN teacher.
  • Liaise with Bucks county council SEN team, outside agencies and specialist teaching service.
  • Liaise with parents of children with SEN
  • Manage the list of students with exam concessions and ensure appropriate assessments are carried out and evidence gathered
  • Staff training on SEN issues
  • Staff support to differentiate lessons to meet the needs of SEN students
  • Represent SEN students on the Senior Leadership Team of the school.
  • Managing the year 8 options process

Previous career history

I started my teaching career 23 years ago as a teacher of Food Technology. I became Head of Department before taking on the role as Head of Citizenship, PSHCE and Careers Education & Guidance.  I have been a SENCo since April 2015 and gained my NASENCo award in January 2017.

What you hope to achieve as an SLE:

I am passionate about supporting the educational journey for students with Special Educational Needs. I hope to be able to work with other school SENCos to share best practice and ensure that students have access to quality first teaching, high quality support aspirational goals and successful outcomes.

Specific areas of expertise, and how you might be able to help other schools:

  • Mentoring new school SENCos
  • Supporting teams of Learning Support Assistants
  • Supporting staff to differentiate their teaching
  • Developing staff new to roles of responsibility
  • Supporting staff new to the profession in ensuring they support the needs of all pupils

Future career goals:

I would like to continue to develop the role of the school SENCo and Additionally Resourced Provision. I enjoy being a member of the Senior Leadership Team and welcome new challenges within this role.
