PGCE

BathSpaUniversity Logo CMYKAstra SCITT offers the PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate of Education) qualification.

We encourage all trainees to take wherever possible the PGCE route into teaching: it’s very much the gold standard and opens up all kinds of opportunities, from studying at Masters level and beyond to a deeper understanding of educational issues, which we believe help you to become a stronger classroom teacher.

A PGCE can give you a better understanding of teaching practices, educational research and theory. It can also be beneficial if you want to teach in other countries because it's an internationally recognised academic qualification.

From September 2024, our PGCE provision will be through Bath Spa University. Graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, Bath Spa is one of the largest providers of teacher education in the UK with a history, with more than seventy five years of experience in teacher training. The PGCE is integrated into our own curriculum and while requiring additional assignments, these have been designed to be manageable for the busy teacher. Teaching on the PGCE takes place both in person as part of our Professional Studies programme and online. There are two modules to complete and support is provided by a team of tutors at Bath Spa.

Like Astra, Bath Spa is experienced in working with trainees who are returning to learning, often after many years away from formal education, and all resources are available via online portals, including access to journals and books.

Finally, while a qualification in itself, the PGCE qualification includes 60 credits at Masters level, the equivalent of one third of an MA that you can add to subsequently.
