PGCE with QTS

We encourage all trainees to take wherever possible the PGCE route into teaching: it’s very much the gold standard and opens up all kinds of opportunities, from studying at Masters level and beyond to a deeper understanding of educational issues, which will help you become a stronger classroom teacher.

PGCE provision is led by Bath Spa University. Graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, Bath Spa is one of the largest providers of teacher education in the UK with more than seventy five years of experience in teacher training.

You'll complete the PGCE with an ability to think critically and reflectively about your own classroom practice and will also have an understanding of educational research and its potential to transform education. It can also be beneficial if you want to teach in other countries because it's an internationally recognised academic qualification.

The PGCE is integrated into our own curriculum and the course has been designed to be manageable for the busy trainee teacher. Most teaching on the PGCE takes place in person as part of our Professional Studies programme with additional online support and tutorials. There are two modules to complete and support is provided by a team of tutors at Bath Spa. 

 

Like Astra, Bath Spa is experienced in working with trainees who are returning to learning, often after many years away from formal education, and all resources are available via online portals, including access to journals and books. There is also structured support in place for trainees with particular learning needs.

Finally, while a qualification in itself, the PGCE qualification includes 60 credits at Masters level, the equivalent of one third of an MA that you can add to subsequently.
