Fundamental maths and English skills
As providers we are required to ensure that our trainees have the fundamental proficiencies in Maths and English needed to gain QTS.
All successful applicants must have both GCSE English and GCSE Maths. We accept a number of international qualifications and equivalancy tests in lieu of GCSEs but do not accept IELTS or similar English Language qualifications on their own. A level 2 qualification does not have the breadth of study required of GCSE and is therefore, in line with statutory requirements, not accepted.
We assess fundamental proficiencies:
- In your application - a low standard of literacy would be a potential cause of rejection at thie stage.
- At interview, you will complete a written task - again, a low standard of literarcy would be a potential cause of rejection at this stage.
- In the Induction period at the start of September we carry out diagnostic assessments in English and Maths for all trainees.
Details of these fundamental proficiencies can be found here.
Using Century Maths and English, trainees where necessary are required to complete additional learning to ensure that they meet all fundamental proficiencies.
